Between the Marshal & the Vampire: "One man wants to protect her. The other, to taste her. Maybe they should share."

"You understand now, Marshal?" Vellum asked. Had there been a hint of smugness in the question, Clay might have reared up and threw a punch. But the other male's voice held only genuine hope.

"I understand," he said with a sigh. He probably should have felt embarrassed for how turned-on Vellum's bloodsucking had made him, but after what he'd just shared with Mariel? Pretty damn difficult to feel bad about any of that. "I had no idea." He raised his head and smiled down at Mariel's blissed-out expression. He caressed her cheek. "Is it always like that?"

"To varying degrees," Vellum answered. "I can control how affected you are, depending on whether I'd like some…participation."

Participation. Clay interpreted that to mean that sometimes the vampire liked to play with his food. That was disturbing in many ways, so Clay chose not to think about it.

"Are you angry?" Mariel asked after she'd opened her eyes. She smoothed her hands nervously down Clay's sides. "Those other times—"

"Don't bother me at all. And I can see why you were shy to come out and tell me." Clay kissed the tip of her nose, garnering a smile from her. "I'd keep that tasty secret to myself, too."

"But now you know." She bit her lip. "It won't be so bad traveling to Everton Fort, will it?"

He had to laugh. The situation was ludicrous. He and Mariel were at the mercy of a vampire who could make them feel incredible amounts of lust, and they didn't seem to mind it very much.

"We'll be just fine," he assured her.

Suddenly consciously of his cock hanging out of his trousers and Vellum hovering nearby, Clay shifted backwards up and off of Mariel. He tucked himself away and refastened his belt as he stood. Vellum had backed off but he still watched Clay and Mariel with that hunting intensity of his. It made Clay wonder: could the vampire have sex as humans did? Did he want to?

A question for later, because now that the vampire's pheromones or whatever it was no longer coursed through his veins, Clay's head was beginning to clear. He had to shake his head. He'd just made love to Mariel while a vampire was drinking the blood from his neck. Good Lord.

Hello Tricia! Thank you for taking the time to join us for an interview about your story in the Alpha Fever Book Set!
Hello! I'm happy to be here with you.

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?
I've been a writer since I was old enough to put sentences together. Since elementary school, I entered every essay contest that came through my schools. I owned those things. When I began winning a bunch of them I knew for sure that I was a writer. I was submitting poems and short stories to magazines when I was in junior high. Old school, too, with query letters and SASEs. It still boggles my mind that I was eleven years old and knew how to put together a submission package. Strangest thing I ever sold was a poem to a crop dusting magazine. Crop dusting! Who knew those guys read poems? I knew nothing about crop dusting, but I was 15 and I'd seen the magazine's entry in Writer's Market which said that it paid fifty dollars. Well, I received a contributor's copy but no fifty dollars. That was my first lesson on the publishing business, haha.

What are the best and the worst aspects of writing?
Best aspect, hands down, is that I'm creating the stories that I want to read. I don't have to hope that someone else writes them; I do it myself. Close behind is the freedom to be creative on my own schedule. Worst aspect is the lack of social interaction. It's just me and my computer and whoever's on Facebook at that time.

What inspires you to write?
The need to see a story told or to flesh out a character. Usually it's a combo of the two, like I'll come up with this interesting guy and I can envision his life unfolding and it kills me, just kills me, that if I don't write it, no one else will. So I write it.

What is the title of your story included in Alpha Fever? How did you come up with this story?
My story is called Between the Marshal & the Vampire. Since this is my first box set, I wanted to come up with something I've never done before just to continue the theme of 'firsts' for me. I've never written about a vampire, nor have I written a Western. Bam! Slam 'em together. No brainer. While I was coming up with the idea I was laughing at myself because let's face it, this concept is silly. But truth be told, I'm pretty proud of the story. I made it work and it's damn sexy.

How did you conduct your research for Between the Marshal & the Vampire?
I needed to investigate nineteenth century underwear for women. I'm normally not much for research, but I knew that underwear was going to be an issue in a love story. As in, the alpha's gotta get beneath it! So it was interesting finding websites dedicated to clothing of that time. Underwear sure has evolved a lot over time! From what I've seen, I expect we'll all be naked in about eight years.

What would your friends say is your best quality?
They'd better say I'm funny or a few people are going to be in pain later on. Seriously, I'd like to say my brains or my charm or something, but all I've got is a witty one-liner or two.

Are reader reviews important to you?
I think many readers don't truly get just HOW important reviews are. A book without reviews or with very few is a gorgeous dress mysteriously hanging on the clearance rack. People are suspicious of it. They figure something's wrong with it. Unless it's a book by a familiar author, most people don't buy books that lack reviews. So please leave reviews and help an author out. J

Do you have any blogs/websites?
I do. My website is www.triciaowensbooks.com. I need people to visit it and make sure it works *wink wink*.

What do you do when you don’t write?
Nothing constructive, really. Okay, I take that back. I read, which is extremely helpful for a writer. Otherwise, bigger picture-wise, I like to travel. I'm always looking for a cool festival or convention to visit, or a country where I can spend some time.

Tell us about your other books?
I've written one other m/f/m ménage, which is Master of No One. That one's also a shifter story featuring a chimera. That's a fun one because the alpha really has his hands full with his two partners. Nothing's easy for them, and I take the time to make sure the romance develops naturally. Otherwise, all my alphas star in m/m books. I've got my Sin City series, which features the owner of a bodyguard agency in Las Vegas and his lover, and Juxtapose City, a series about elite police, empaths, and telepaths in a futuristic setting. I absolutely love to write about power dynamics, so you'll find that in nearly everything I write no matter the gender pairing.

If you could share one thing about yourself that you would like readers to know what would it be?
I write a lot about Las Vegas ('write what you know') and some readers aren't aware that I used to be a casino games dealer. I once dealt blackjack to Ben Affleck when I was working at the Hard Rock casino here in Vegas, and I absolutely killed him on the table. He couldn't win a hand. After I took all his chips, he stood up, said, "F*** you," and stormed off. So I've got that going for me. In truth, Ben and Matt, when they played there, were very nice and tremendously generous tippers, so Ben could have flipped the table on me and I would have been okay with that.
