Chapter One
“Paige, where in the hell did you put the password log book?” Sylvia groaned as she flicked on the computer and the logo for the Shifting Hearts Dating Agency flashed across the screen. The agency had been open for six months, growing a little more every day. Their wall of successful matings and marriages increasing making Sylvia eager to check out her newest applicants and see any potential matches. But she always forgot the password. Either that, or Paige was always changing it.
She bet the latter.
Tricky damned cat shifter.
A descendent of Aphrodite, helping others find love was in Sylvia’s blood. Nothing made her happier. One day she’d find her own swoon-worthy prince charming, but at this point…well, she was content helping others. A tinge of sadness slid in and she firmly booted it away. The right person would come along at the right time, not before. This was her job, her chosen career and damned if she wasn’t going to use her power for helping people. With a push if it required it.
But if she saw that damned incubus, Carter, again, she was going to shove his ass clear out the window. Cheating fucker. He’d get his one day. She had people to help and it didn’t do her much good to think about murder before she’d at least had a cup of coffee. A really big cup too.
Everything here in Cypress Valley, Texas ran toward big and she hoped by setting up business here with the growing shifter population, her profits would start to be too. It was all great being descended from Goddess material, but if you didn’t have the dollars to go with the lifestyle, then it wasn’t so much fun anymore. Time to shake her money maker and get some romance in the air.
She got up from the desk, her new heels making her wince. She hobbled over to the kitchenette area in the back of the office and flicked on the overpriced individual cup coffee maker Paige insisted they buy. Her co-partner stood next to the counter, stuffing the better part of a jumbo blueberry muffin into her mouth.
“Now that is one big muffin.”
She held up a finger and kept on chewing.
“Nice salute there, hun. Cat get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning?”
Paige growled around the muffin, her cat shining in her eyes.
“Ewwww. Somebody is grumpy today.” Sylvia rolled her eyes and shook her head. Coffee. Lots of coffee. Then she’d deliberate about food. And passwords. She eyed the flavored pods with distrust, knowing Paige was watching, and selected one that read Hazelnut. She popped it into place like Paige had shown her and hit the start button. A dribble of brown liquid began to flow from the machine and too late she remembered she hadn’t placed a cup below the spigot.
“Shit!” Sylvia scrambled and reached for the nearest mug, shoving it in place. The scalding hot liquid poured over her hand and she let out a yowl.
A choked laugh from across the kitchenette met her ears.
Still munching on her muffin with an innocent smile on her face, Paige grinned and gave a pinky wave.
Bitch. At least that was an improvement over the last finger, she supposed.
Sylvia gazed at her friend with narrowed eyes and ran her hand under the faucet. “That wasn’t nice.”
“Sorry. But you made me almost inhale that one.” Paige snorted into her hand and popped the last of the muffin into her mouth. Not afraid of sporting her brunette curves, Paige was a kitty to be reckoned with, whether it was man or muffin…or modern appliance.
“Ugh.” Sylvia snatched up her cup and marched back to her desk, irritation prickling under her skin. New machines wigged her out. So did computers and newfangled cars. If she got too excited, her goddess tendencies could have adverse side effects to the point where Paige teased her that she must be related to Harry Dresden. At her blank look, she’d sighed and flicked something up on her phone, twisting it so Sylvia could see. “You know. The Dresden Files?” A picture of a book cover covered the screen.
She’d had no earthly idea what her friend was talking about. If it didn’t have vampires or a hot scantily clad shifter, she didn’t bother.
“You need to read more than just smut, girl.”
“Yeah…yeah.”
But what was the point to that?
“Sorry, Syl. The password book’s in the drawer where I always leave it.” Paige maneuvered her way to the desk on heels so high Sylvia didn’t know how she didn’t fall on her impeccably made up face. “And unless you plan on sticking your mouth underneath the pour nozzle, I’d have a cup ready next time.”
“Ha ha.”
Her friend’s blazer and top worked well with the jeans and boots she’d selected for the day. It was raining and knowing her cat shifter partner, she’d rather be curled up in her bed with a pile of blankets than be out and about.
Paige clutched an oversize cup of coffee like it was her lifeline, pausing mid-stride to take a sip. The rest of her may have been spot on but her bleary eyes told a story. Sylvia wasn’t sure she really wanted to ask.
“You okay?”
“Yep.” Paige set the cup down, the milky brown liquid sloshing dangerously close to the rim. “Tried out a new venue last night and I think I found us a whole new segment of the shifter population.”
“Really?” Sylvia grinned, “And where did you go, pray tell?”
Paige glanced around, nibbling her lip. “Is Rafe here?”
“Nope. I haven’t seen your brother yet. Why?”
“Good.” A flash of cat in Paige’s eyes revealed her excitement. “I went to Ventures.”
Sylvia wrinkled her nose. “Where?”
“The new bondage club on Fifth Street. It caters to humans, shifters, and other paranormals.” A smile lit up her eyes and she reached for the coffee again, sitting down with a wince. “They had a kind of open house event and I wanted to check it out to see if there was any potential for us to join forces.”
“And?”
Paige focused on her cup, a secret smile on her lips.
“Did you hurt yourself?”
“Not exactly.”
Sylvia blinked. Oh….So that was how it was.
“So you think we’ll get some clients?”
Paige fidgeted in her chair and fired up her own computer. “You just wait, girlfriend. I have a feeling before the day is out we’ll be seeing something new coming across our desk. Now, where did you put the file on the Jefferson twins? I think I met someone that could give them a run for their money.”

"A real feel good romance with a good splash of humour."
This is a young adult book as it involves two families with teenage children. The subject is a bit difficult but never gone into explicitly and there is no graphic sex.
Summer is here, festival season is underway and the hard work is only just beginning, but with the help of music boss Will Adam’s new P.A. everything is sure to run on schedule.

Thrown in at the deep end in her first fulltime job in years, Ava is pulling out all the stops. She needs this job and nothing is going to stop her from earning enough to send her sister on the performing arts trip of a lifetime.
But Ava hasn’t reckoned on her violent past catching up with her. When her terrifying secret gets out Ava is desperate to protect not only herself but all those around her, including Will and his son.

Can she accept the help and love Will is offering or will she be unable to stop her past ruining what should be...

An Excerpt from Chapter Eight

Ava was dishing up Sunday lunch when the doorbell rang. She put down the Yorkshire pudding tray and was about to go to the door when she heard Kate running. She turned back to the oven and brought the joint of beef to the table. She had just put the gravy on to boil when she heard familiar voices.

“No, you’re not interrupting anything. Come on in. Ava! Your boss is here.” Kate called out.

Ava felt a strange flip in her stomach and she had to swallow before she could reply.

“You’ll have to come through, Will. I can’t stop at the moment,” she called back.

Ava smiled to herself, her stomach continued flipping over as she carried on stirring the gravy. It boiled quickly, the bubbles bursting on the top of the thick liquid, reminding her of how her stomach felt. She moved to another pan, tipped the minted peas, and buttered broccoli into a serving. She drained the baby carrots and then took the crisp, roast potatoes from the oven. By the time she turned back to her visitors, she was red in the face.

“Phew! It’s hot.” She fanned her face with the oven glove as Will, followed by Jake came through to the kitchen.

“Oh sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt. Kate said it was okay.” Will immediately started backing out of the doorway as he saw the kitchen table laden with food, all ready for their meal. “I only came round to give you the new office keys. I had to have all the locks changed and I have an early meeting tomorrow morning. If I’m held up at all, you won’t be able to get in. I’ve left you a great list of things to do so you won’t be idle while I’m not around.” He put two keys on the worktop and took a quick step back. Ava saw his eyes slide to the joint of beef as he spoke again. “Come on Jake, we must let Ava and Kate get on with their lunch.” Will was already turning away.

Jake was hanging onto his father’s shoulder, his dark eyes wide with envy.

“Cor Dad, just look at those Yorkshires! Are they home-made?” He was almost drooling at the sight of the crisp golden batter.

“Of course, whatever else would they be?” Ava replied, looking surprised.

“You can get frozen ones.” Jake was still boggling. He licked his lips. “But they don’t look anywhere near as good as those. I love Yorkshires.” He reached forwards automatically, his long fingers stretching towards the piled plate. Will slapped his hand down abruptly.

“For goodness sake Jake, can’t you control your stomach?” Will looked hard at his son, but Jake licked his lips again and ignored the pressure his father was putting on his shoulder to turn him around. He stood stubbornly facing the table.

“Not when there are Yorkshires like that about. And don’t you try and look so innocent either. I know exactly what you’re thinking. You’d pinch one too if you thought you could get away with it.” Jake took his eyes off the batter and stared right back at his father. Will blushed furiously but couldn’t deny the accusation.

Ava sighed.

“We don’t use the dining room much. It’s too big for just the two of us, so if you don’t mind squashing up in here, why don’t you both stay, if you don’t have anything else planned that is. I’ve made plenty…” she gestured towards the laden table. “Come on let’s eat while it’s all good and hot.” She encouraged when Will didn’t answer immediately.

Jake immediately slithered around his Dad, and sat at the table before anyone could stop him. Kate giggled madly and went to the drawer for more cutlery.

Will grabbed Jake’s shoulder again.

“Jake! Get up. We can’t invite ourselves like this, and I’ve got a table booked at Ritchie’s for later.” He tried to drag his son from the chair. Jake hung on hard, his knuckles white as he clung to the tabletop and refused to move.

“Cancel it. We didn’t enjoy it there the other night and there’s no way I’m missing out on a dinner like this. It looks fab, and just look at those roasters too, come on Dad, roast beef is your very favourite. You know you want to stay.” Jake pleaded.

Ava laughed as Kate put out two more plates, knives, and forks.

“Looks like you’ve been out voted Will, come on sit down. You can carve.” She handed him a long knife.

He looked hard at Jake for a long moment and then his eyes moved back to the joint of beef on the table. Ava saw the tip of his tongue run round the inside of his lips as he hesitated for just a moment too long.

“Yay! Your Dad’s stomach has won. I think you can stay Jake,” she cried and Jake whooped in delight.

Will was still slightly reserved.

“Are you sure you don’t mind Ava? I feel terrible just butting in like this.” He sounded embarrassed, but looked longingly at the piece of meat on the table. She stuck a large fork into the joint of meat and the juices began to run. Will’s stomach chose that exact moment to let out a huge, loud rumble.

Ava raised an eyebrow.

“Of course I don’t mind, especially as your stomach sounds as though it’s starving. You can see I’ve made loads. Come on, or do you need me to carve. It can be awkward if you’re not used to it.” She went to take the knife back from Will, but he turned it expertly in his hand, grabbed the fork handle and leaned over the meat. Jake let out a great sigh of relief and let go of the tabletop as Will began to carve with enthusiasm.

“No, it’s okay. I can manage.” He sliced off the outer crisp layer and groaned longingly as he saw the delicate pink meat beneath.

“Just rare, my favourite.” He cut several slices and then sat down with the others.

Kate flapped her hands.

“Now we all have to say Grace.” She put her hands together as if in prayer and winked at Jake once while everyone joined her. Jake pulled a knowing face at his Dad.

“Grace!” They all cried together and then fell about laughing.

“I can’t believe you do that too.” Will passed round the plate of beef. “I think we saw it in some film once years ago and it’s just stuck.” He loaded his plate with roast potatoes and vegetables, then tipped on a good helping of gravy.

Jake passed the plate of Yorkshires and pinched another off the top as he realized there was enough for two or three each.

An hour of clattering, munching and happy chatter later, Ava stood up to clear the dirty dishes from the table, but Will pushed his chair back and took the plates from her hand as he stood up.

“Jake and I will wash up. You sit down for a while longer.” He turned to the sink and began to run hot water into the bowl.
Ava protested immediately.

“No, sit back down. We can do it later. It’s not often we have guests, we’re enjoying the company.” She caught him about the waist and turned him back round to the table. She was surprised at how hot and hard the muscles in his stomach felt under her hands and she blushed as she realized what she had just done.

Will drew in a deep breath as her slender arms wound around his body and he tried to not to wish that he wasn’t wearing a shirt. He suddenly wanted to feel her gentle hands touching his naked skin. He gulped hard, fighting to stay in control of his breathing. He forced the ridiculous thought to the back of his mind.

“Okay.” He gave in and moved back towards the table so that she would let go of him. He didn’t think he could stand her touching him for much longer without scooping her up into his arms and kissing her passionately. “I’ll do as I’m told. That was so delicious, Ava. Better than any restaurant. You’ve really spoiled us.” He sat back in his chair and stuck his feet out under the table, letting the tension drain from him. He didn’t know what was happening to him, but he felt almost too relaxed. He gave up wondering about the reasons why and went with the feeling of contentment that he had rarely experienced.

Jake looked at his Dad a little warily and then suddenly spoke.

“Dad, are you going to ask Ava to marry you?”

The relaxed feeling disappeared instantly. Will shot up in his seat again and nearly choked as he took an unexpected gulp of air.
“What?” He stammered as his eyes bulged at his son. “Well, perhaps not right this minute. I was just letting my dinner go down. Why?” His cheeks were turning redder by the second and Ava fanned her own face again. She was too embarrassed to speak.
Jake grinned widely.

“Good, I don’t want to tread on anyone’s toes here so I was just checking.” He turned to Ava and slid out of his chair, then very seriously, he bobbed down on one knee in front of her and grabbed her hand. “Ava, that was the best dinner I’ve ever had. I want to eat dinners like that forever. Will you marry me?” He looked up at her hopefully, dark eyes as soft as a puppy’s.

Ava put her free hand to her mouth to stop the giggles.

“You might want to know what the pudding is first. Kate made it.” She wriggled her hand out of Jake’s. She turned to the oven again, brought out the apple crumble and wafted it under Jakes nose. He followed it greedily with wide brown eyes. “There’s homemade custard too.” She added as an incentive.

Jake’s shoulders slumped in mock despair.

“Oh no! Crumble, my favourite!” He gazed longingly at the steaming, pale gold dish. “Ava, I’m sorry to let you down so badly so soon, but if you don’t release me from our recent engagement, I may have to commit bigamy. Kate will you marry me too?”

Cooking up a storm with Jackie Williams

I always think that I was blessed growing up in a home where reading was endlessly encouraged and bedtime stories were a delightful trip into dream world.

Only a few books stand out in my mind from that pre teen time, but I am sure that these have been an influence in my own writing. Whatever your age, being swept up in a story is the key to a brilliant read. The best are where you finish the book with maybe a tear in your eye or a smile on your lips, but always with a heave of your chest and a huge satisfied sigh.

In my youth I loved reading an adventure. The Three Investigators by Robert Arthur kept me turning the pages as Jupiter, Pete and Bob investigated themselves into and out of one scrape after another. Another of my favourite books was Walter Farley’s ‘The Black Stallion’. First published well before I was born, the book never felt old. I remember lying in bed imagining the wind racing through my hair as I was carried away over the island sand on the back of the magnificent Shetan.

I first dipped my toe into romance when my sister became misty eyed while reading an intriguing, cloth bound, gold leafed book. She coveted it and wouldn’t let me see what it was, but after a few days irritation at her smug smirks and deep, heartfelt sighs, I managed to discern the title and author. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. The words didn’t mean much to me, but I was impressed that a lady had apparently written the book and, undaunted by my sister’s reticence to share, I bided my time. One morning before school my sister foolishly left the book on the bedside table and that was it...I scooped it up and ran for the bathroom. Locking the door behind me, I reverently thumbed the cover before opening the fine, almost silky pages.

On first sneaking a peek into her book, I wondered what she had made all the fuss was about. Long words, unfamiliar surroundings, strange ways of addressing your father and a lot of chattering women, but by the end of the chapter I was already seduced. The book barely left my hands until I had finished it and I’m not even sure that my sister ever had it back!
I feel sure that these early encounters with adventure, mystery, and romance have influenced my own stories, but writing a book feels a little like inventing a perfect recipe; a dash of this, a pinch of that, all mixed with a good dollop of something else to enhance the flavour before serving up your best attempt. I call it cooking up a storm.

I only hope everyone enjoys my recipes for a good read as much as I enjoy writing them.

"Compelling & Real To Life"~ @MicMystery Michaela Mcpherson Mystery Series #Giveaway #Suspense #RPBP

Chapter 1
“Perfecto, this stuff looks flawless,” Boris said in his thickly accented voice as he held a test tube to the light. The Russian smiled broadly, his thin lips stretched across his decayed teeth and skeletal face. The light from the window outlined his permanently crushed, but healed anterior skull that gave him the look of the monster he truly was. He agitated the test tube between his fingers and re-examined its contents. It was a masterpiece. “There’s enough here to kill everybody in Yankee Stadium and all the cops in Richmond,” he predicted from his tall, though stooped height of six feet, five inches. He reached for a small glass container and transferred a portion of the five gallons to a laboratory beaker. He held the larger quantity up to the window and examined the liquid. “And look, there’s no residue in the bottom and the fluid is perfectly clear.” He turned around to his partner and gushed, “Perfecto, my tovarich, perfecto!”

Snake laughed and clapped his partner on the back. “Way to go, tall guy. Good deal. You know we gotta maximize our efforts. Neither one of us wants to work hard or take extra chances, especially now since they’re lookin’ for me anyway.” Snake moved closer to the glass carboy and smiled as he saw the colorless, odorless and tasteless five gallon drum of liquid. “Man, that looks good. Does it have a smell?”

Boris bent his shiny, bald head forward and sniffed deeply. “No, not that I can tell. I can’t smell anything, but I haven’t got a good nose anyway. “You give it a sniff and see what you think,” he said as he gestured towards the liquid.

Snake moved next to the large glass container and noticed additional small beakers and test tubes of fluid sitting to the side. Each container was labeled and numbered. “You must’ve been a hell of a chemist back in the day,” he remarked as he finger-combed his greasy black hair off his face. Sometimes he wore it in a ponytail but he hadn’t pulled it back today. He bent over and sniffed the carboy. “Nah. Nothing.” He shook his head and said, “I can’t smell nuthin’ either. Good job, my man,” he said enthusiastically, a slow smile spreading across his swarthy, pockmarked face. “You’re a real scientist.”

Boris lit a cigarette, coughed and said, “Man, you have no idea of the stuff I can do. You ain’t seen nothing. I got more killing recipes than Carter’s got little liver pills.” He smiled ominously and showed his rotten teeth. Snake felt a tinge run up his spine. This guy even looked like the monster his reputation claimed he was. He decided to watch himself carefully around Boris and never give him the upper hand.

Snake nodded, “Yeah. Well, I got plenty of chances to see your talents this week!” Once again he checked out his partner and sized him up. He was a dangerous, unpredictable, scary dude.

“Yeah, but I’m never tellin’ you much,” Boris assured him. “There’ll most likely be one day I’ll wanna kill you,” he admitted, the broad grin again slicing through his pale, skeletal face. This guy’s serious. He is crazy.

Snake ignored him and brushed invisible lint off the front of his blue scrubs. “Shut-up man. No need for talk like that.” He knew Boris was a madman, totally wacko. His handlers had told him to be careful. But the money had been too good to pass up and besides, he could take good care of himself. His reputation spoke for him. He had no idea who his bosses were and little was known about the Russian scientist. Rumor suggested he’d long been a mortal enemy of the United States and other stories suggested he was an assassin. Snake didn’t want to push the point. He picked up the container of fluid and placed it in front of him, his face a mask of evil.

“You know what, Boris, old man, I’m thinking we can wipe out an army… or at least a police force with this stuff. Whatdaya think?” He gave him a half smile.

Boris stared at him, his cold grey eyes, bony face and crushed skull glistened in the low light from the barred windows. His eyes roamed the room to the large aquarium that housed all kinds of prickly fish and marine life. The huge tank glowed eerily in the fading light. Boris stared at his fish fondly and gave Snake a strange look and said in a quiet voice, “Of course we can. I already said that. What do you think the plan is?”

Chapter 2

“Dottie, where did you get that marvelous Italian leather bag? I’d die for one like that,” Camilla Rothrock gushed in her drawn out Alabama accent. “I’ve just gotta have one.”

Dottie held up her newest leather pocketbook so all of her best friends could ooh and ah over it. “I had it made especially for me in Italy,” she bragged. The bag was beautiful, soft and buttery between her fingers. “I really love it. Look, it has a special gun pocket stitched in so I can carry my very own Glock,” she said proudly as she pulled her gun holster out of her purse and swiftly returned it before anyone noticed.

Margaret Massie glared from her from across the round table. “Oh for heaven’s sake, Dottie! Give it a rest! Whatever do you need to carry a gun around for? We’re a bunch of old ladies. No one is gonna mess with us,” she admonished as she rolled her eyes and batted her false eyelashes at her best friend of many years. “We’re hardly ever left on our own.” She glowered as her friend.

“Margaret Massie, how can you possibly be so short-sighted?” The Countess Dorothy Borghase exclaimed, disgust evident on her aging, but still lovely face. She flipped her head and a long piece of silver-white hair escaped from her elegant chignon. “After all you’ve been through?” She stared at her friend in disbelief and continued, “That’s precisely the reason we need to pack some heat. Because we are old and weak and can’t run as fast. We’re sitting ducks for most of the bad guys out there.”

Margaret squinted her eyes and frowned at her. “Pack some heat? Really. You sound like you’re in a …” Margaret paused for a moment and looked at her friends, “what do they call it, a gang. What is it? Gangsta talk, or however you say it?” she added sarcastically. As the wife of one of the wealthiest men in Virginia and a blueblood from birth, Margaret didn’t know much about gangs or crime. “But still, Dottie… really, a handmade purse… from Italy, nonetheless, especially designed for your gun? Puhleeze. That’s ridiculous, a bit over the top, wouldn’t you agree, Kathryn?” Margaret asked as she glanced over at Kathryn Lee who was watching her friends an amused look on her face.

Kathryn Lee of Wyndley Farm in Hanover County laughed, her blue eyes crinkling in the corners as she smiled over her water goblet at her friends of many years. Kathryn was the wife of law and order politician Congressman Adam Patrick Lee of Virginia and she clearly had an opinion. She was one of the best target shooters around and could shoot better than most men. She opened her mouth to respond when Dottie interrupted her.

Dottie rearranged one of the intricate wire combs holding her classic up do in place. Her silver hair gleamed under the brass and crystal chandelier in Lamaire Restaurant at Richmond’s historical Hotel Jefferson. “I didn’t design it just for my gun,” she said defensively. “I designed it for my cell phone, my makeup, for the color of the leather, the intricate stitching, the design, and beyond that, the label,” she replied in a snarky voice. Dottie paused for a moment and added, “Besides Vitrio Lanbrucci has been designing fine leather for the Borghase family for over a hundred years.”

Margaret rolled her eyes and turned to Kathryn. “So, Kathryn, what do you think? I know you’d tried to answer my question a few minutes ago,” she said pointedly as she turned to stare at Dottie, “but the Countess forgot her manners. Don’t you think Dottie’s gun purse is a little over the top?” Really,” she opined, a smirk on her face.

Kathryn opened her mouth to answer when Dottie interrupted again, her vivid blue eyes wide with concern. She stared at Camilla who looked strange, frightened, actually. Her pupils were wide and she seemed unable to speak.

“Camilla, whatever is the matter with you? Your face is flushed and your eyes are enormous. Are you ill?” Dottie asked as she rose from her seat.

Kathryn was alarmed as well since Camilla was unable to respond. Her eyes stared wildly at them and she opened her mouth but no words came out. Suddenly, she fell forward, and her head lolled on the table.

“Kathryn, call 911 on your phone. She must’ve had a stroke of something,” Dottie commanded as her heart raced with fear. It could be my head lying on the table and not Camilla’s. Life seemed very precious to Dottie at that second. I sure don’t wanna die in Lamaire restaurant in the Hotel Jefferson. What a spectacle that would be! Of course, she knew Camilla’s didn’t either and as she stood by her friend, tears popped into her eyes. I’ll have to call General Rothrock and tell him something dreadful has happened to his mother.

Kathryn flagged a waiter and moved closer to Camilla’s chair and checked her pulse. She could barely feel it as it was weak and irregular. Kathryn looked into Camilla’s eyes and her pupils that were huge and dark, liquids pools of fluid that saw nothing. Her face was flushed and red.

A moment later, a young waitress carrying a huge serving tray staggered forward and then fell to the floor, spilling food, water and wine all over the oriental carpet. She lay prone and unresponsive.

“Make that two ambulances,” Dottie motioned to the maitre’d who was on his way over.
