First Things First
Let's take a look at Angelica's review of "Jack and The Magical Beanstalk" by author Pablo Michaels.

"This book has the feel of a fairy tale. There are many segments that could have come straight out of a big picture book my daughter reads. The rest is definitely not for children, but fantastic in its own way. My only complaint comes with the ending. Sam doesn't seem to really have a complete story. I would have liked him to have more closure. I would definitely recommend this book to any fan of m/m erotica."

What is Our Purpose
For us to communicate with each other and help each other to understand the power of the review!
In general, these segments are to help not only authors understand a few things about the reviews they may get, but it is also for the people who leave the book reviews as well.
Reviews are a crucial element for any book. Reviews help not only the person considering the purchase of a book but they help the author understand how their book is interpreted by a reader.
We are going to ask the reviewer, Angelica Dawson, these questions today.
  • Do you have a general review rating that you go by? 5stars, 4 stars, etc. What are the deciding factors that you weigh your decision on? (For instance: I gave “Jack and The Magical Beanstalk” 5 stars because…)
  • What about Pablo Michaels book, “Jack and The Magical Beanstalk” did you like the best?
  • What about an author inspires you to read a book and review it?
  • What is your favorite genre to read?
  • Are you a plot driven or character driven reader? Why?
  • Do you post reviews for all the books you read?
  • What happens before you sit down to read a book for a review?
  • Do you have a special place where you like to read? Do you need complete silence?
  • How many times do you read a book before you actually write the review?
  • When posting a review, which sales channels do you typically post to? Why?
  • Have you ever had one of your reviews removed from a sales channel?
  • How do you think the digital age has impacted literature as a whole?
  • Are you an author? What is the title of your most recent publication? Please feel free to share a link for your book here as well.
The big question that everyone wants to know...
  • How important do you believe reviews are in the purchasing decision process?
It's easy to follow along!

About The Book
In this adult fairy tale young, awkward, young Jack sells their prize cow Pearly White for magical beans to a strange man in a red bikini. Little does Jack’s mother, Lorene, know that the beans grow into a giant, magical beanstalk, high above the clouds?

Jack ascends the beanstalk to a land where a Giant Slave serves his larger Master, Jack begs Slave for food to satisfy his hunger from his long journey. But Jack finds Master hoarding treasures.

Attempting to escape the wrath of Master and Slave with the treasures, Jack encounters a handsome, engaging normal sized human man. Sam lives with others that live naturally without clothing deep in the forest. As Jack ages he becomes a handsome man, just like his father, attracting many men, including the two farmhands, Zeke and Adam.

Even though Jack has enabled the farm to prosper with the treasures he stole from Master and is met with increasing danger, he climbs the magical beanstalk again and again to find more treasures and pursue Sam.

About The Author
Pablo Michaels disguised himself as a shy, friendly heterosexual during his adolescence, fantasizing other males. Falling in love with another man his first year in college, he followed him to another university to maintain their platonic love, while he continued in his in studies. When he had his first sexual encounter with another man, just before turning twenty-one, he exploded into gay life with lust and anger. He attempted to live his new life naturally, seeking love, ignoring the statistics of the books he read on homosexuality in high school, and proving what he had read was wrong.
He wrote poetry and stories since third grade. When he turned twenty-one, he moved to San Francisco to work and write, experiencing more of gay life. In the 1980's he wrote every chance he had, trying and failing miserably at publishing mainstream fiction. He published his first story in 1986 in a literary magazine. read more...

  2. What about an author inspires you to read a book and review it?

    1. I am most drawn to authors who put themselves on the page. That’s most definitely true of Pablo Michaels and his stories, no less so Jack and the Magical Beanstalk.

    2. Thank you Angelica. I try to write like authors who inspire because they write passion page after page, a passion for life.

  3. What is your favorite genre to read?

    1. My favourite is fantasy. I love magic and myths. Although the magic in this story is more directly related to the beanstalk than a controlled magic, it definitely fits into that group.

    2. I tend to read realistic, gay romance and mysteries.

  4. Are you a plot driven or character driven reader? Why?

    1. I enjoy a good plot. I like to see how the stories of several characters are woven together in one narrative. That said, I can forgive many plot holes for the sake of character development.

    2. Like I said with Ray Sostre, I try to balance a nicely planned plot with developed characters. I view both of them as important.

    1. The tone. I liked how it felt like a fairy tale.

    2. That is exactly what I tried to portray.

  6. Do you post reviews for all the books you read?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Most. Some I only give a rating rather than a full review, but I try to review, especially when I have something constructive/supportive to impart.

    2. I don't write reviews for all books I read. for Those I skim through, I would be at fault to write a review.

  7. What happens before you sit down to read a book for a review?

    1. I don’t normally read books for reviewing. I read the books of my fellow author friends and then review them in support, but I don’t volunteer to read books of authors I don’t have a connection with. That said, before sitting down for this one, I made sure I had ample time to finish it. I have a lot of trouble picking up the threads of a story after a day or two away.

    2. I am like Angelica. If I am asked to write a review by an author, I make sure I have time to read the book. Unlike Angelica, I need it fresh in my mind. I'm getting up there in years and my memory is not as good as it used to be.

  8. Do you have a special place where you like to read? Do you need complete silence?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I need no voices. Music is fine, although I don’t require it, but I do need my family to have other occupations so I have the concentration to give the story. I like to read in my sitting room, in the sunshine, but I can read on the bus, in the library and a few other places just as well.

    2. I prefer to read at my desk on my PC. But I can read on my laptop while there are other activities going on around me.

  9. How many times do you read a book before you actually write the review?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I normally only read the book once. I might go back and reread sections, but rarely the whole book.

      Delete
    2. I read it fast the first time. The second time I'll read it slower.

  10. Do you have a general review rating that you go by? 5stars, 4 stars, etc. What are the deciding factors that you weigh your decision on? (For instance: I gave “Jack and The Magical Beanstalk” 5 stars because…)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I am a generally harsh reviewer, another reason why don’t often volunteer to do it. For me, five stars is something that really blows me out of the water. Those are stories that haunt me for days after, often with my own imaginings of dropped threads in the story. Characters that I remember months later. Four stars is my most common rating. Those are stories I really enjoy and would happily recommend. Three stars and less are for those the grab me less, or in some case, trouble me rather than engaging me. A lot of erotica can rub me wrong.

      Delete
    2. I actually prefer not to a have a star rating. I would rather give an honest review being able to critique a book thoroughly.

      Delete
  11. When posting a review, which sales channels do you typically post to? Why?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. My reviews are generally posted to Amazon and Goodreads. The first because that’s where I purchase my ebooks, and the second because I like the social interaction between authors and reviewers that can be found there.

      Delete
    2. I post to Amazon, obviously and unfortunately the most influential site. I also post to GoodReads and Barnes and Noble when appropriate.

      Delete
  12. Have you ever had one of your reviews removed from a sales channel?

    ReplyDelete
  13. How do you think the digital age has impacted literature as a whole?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It has made the field so much wider and fuller than before. Although there is opportunity for less well-crafted manuscripts to reach prominence, it also gives the opening to new authors that otherwise might never share their work at all.

      Delete
    2. I agree with Angelica for the same reasons, but I still prefer reading a book in hard copy.

  14. Are you an author? What is the title of your most recent publication? Please feel free to share a link for your book here as well.

  15. How important do you believe reviews are in the purchasing decision process?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In my purchasing, it isn’t very important at all. I rarely look farther than the number of stars when buying and even then it doesn’t sway me much. That said, having had titles with a lot of reviews and others with very few, I believe they are very important to most readers.

      Delete
    2. They don't determine my choice in reading a book.
